Welcome to Wood Summit Småland, this year ONE day – June 27. Wood Summit Småland is a seminar on the opening of the exhibition Architecture of Necessity in which projects from the international competition with the same name are exhibited.
The theme of the competition 2019 is:
”Considering the most pressing issues of today the jury would especially love to see entries that deal with the rural context – reactivation of forgotten places both with the transformation of existing buildings and with new typologies, for example combining living, work and 'freespace'.”
The seminar is in English.
Program on June 27th:
Kl 9.30 Registration and coffee
Kl 10 The conference opens with a short presentation of the issues of the day is given.
Helena Bjarnegård, National Architect at National Board of Housing, Building and Planning speaks about designed habitat, the assignment given by the Government and its importance. In February 2018, the Government presented a new policy for architecture, form and design for sustainably designed habitats, which among other things emphasizes a strengthened responsibility and proposal for a new national goal for architecture, form and design. Architecture, form and design and carefully designed habitats can contribute to sustainable urban development. How cities are planned and designed creates the conditions for sustainable development in the cities and can strengthen the social aspects and counteract segregation processes. People's opportunities for development and well-being are largely influenced by how homes, residential environments, public places and cities are shaped. The National Architect's assignment concerns collaboration and advice to all municipalities.
Daniel Urey, Head of Strategic Cultural Planning, Arklab speaks on The Idea of the Rural
It is a mapping conversation in how the idea of the rural has been created since the first industrial revolution. How did the rural become a rhetorical surface made for acknowledging and nourishing modernity, the urban life? With an ongoing climate change, we urgently need to change the term of conversation between the rural and the urban. It calls for a great effort in de-linking the rural from the dominant urban-centric discourse. But how, where, for whom, by whom and with whom? And what does this mean for architecture? Or rather what does architecture mean for the rural?
Kl 12 A luncheon buffet is served in Café Eken
Kl 13 The winning projects are presented and the day is rounded off with a prize ceremony
A home of sport, community and celebration by Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects in cooperation with Advanced Timber Concepts Studio, Australia.
The project is presented by Patrick Beale, Adjunct Research Fellow, Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Education, UWA Design School och sedan 2007 Director vid ATC Studio
The center aims to host and serve all members of the community for the sporting, community and cultural events. A key element in the concept design was the need for a sustainable, memorable building - that is easily maintained, and flexible enough to meet the current and future needs of the community.
The Multi-Function Sports Hall is a portal frame structure spanning 28.5 meters a method developed by ATC studio.
Stokkøya – Investigating the potential of rural communities by Pir II, Norway is presented by Ogmund Sørli
Pir II has been a part of the development since 2001, and the work is still ongoing. The project challenges and demonstrates how architecture can contribute to create growth in and revitalize rural communities, even with limited resources.
While urban architecture has developed constantly over the last decades, rural architecture has generally been limited to scenic architecture on scenic plots. This project takes a different approach, investigating the complete cultural eco-system of rural communities.
Healing Garden by ZRS Architekten, Germany
Leon Radeljic and his team present Trauma Therapy Centre in Chamchamal, run by The Jiyan Foundation for Human Rights. ZRS Architekten is specialized in using traditional building materials and has since its start in 2003 engaged in projects and research aiming at minimizing the use of fossils. This project refers to the historic building typologies and techniques of the region.
